I don’t care what time of year it is, Mexican food ALWAYS sounds good. I know the default when you’re whippin’ up some Taco meat is to just buy the pre-packaged seasoning, and I get it! It’s easier, cheaper, and requires zero effort. But making your own seasoning can be just as simple, and you probably have most of the ingredients in your pantry anyways. If you don’t, I guarantee you’ll use any/all of them at some point and so spices are always a good investment.
Pre-packaged seasoning is packed with additional (unnecessary) sugars and “value added” flavors…this basically means they’re processing these packages with starch, extra salt and sugar so that it’ll last longer on the shelves. Cheaper doesn’t mean healthier, and so if you’re wanting to go the better and honestly, more satisfying, route then you came to the right place.
P R E P
This entire recipe is really just PREP, so pull out all your spices and start adding! If you know you’ll be making seasoned meat frequently over the next month, double this recipe or even quadruple it. It’s smart to keep this seasoning in an airtight container in a cool, dry place so that it’ll last longer.
Serving Size: 3 tablespoons–perfect for 1 lb of ground turkey/beef, although you can use just 1 tablespoon if you’d prefer.
- 1 tablespoon of Chili Powder.
- 1 teaspoon of Garlic Powder.
- 1 teaspoon of Paprika.
- 1 teaspoon of Cumin.
- 1/2 teaspoon of Oregano.
- 1/2 teaspoon of Onion Powder.
- 1/4-1/2 teaspoon of Red Pepper Flakes (depending on how spicy you like it).
- 1/4 teaspoon of Black Pepper.
- 1/4 teaspoon of Salt.
Mix to combine, and add to any meat for seasoning!
